Despite a late third-period rally from the Carolina Hurricanes, the Washington Capitals got a strong performance from key players, including two first-period goals from Nicklas Backstrom, to take a 4-2 victory in Game 1. With a 1-0 series lead, the Capitals will look to build on their momentum in Game 2 Saturday.

Although Washington got the win, the road ahead is not an easy one, as Andrei Svechnikov and company were not easy to beat, especially in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

After allowing the Hurricanes to dictate the style and pace of play through the first four games, the Capitals got back to their identity as a physical forechecking team and put together a complete effort for the first time in the series.

With the first two goals of the Caps' 2019 postseason campaign, Backstrom had a strong showing in Game 1, declaring that he and Washington are locked in and ready to repeat. He was dangerous offensively Thursday, but also played a solid defensive game, so look for him to be an impact player all-around heading into Game 2.
Andrei Svechnikov (2 G, 0 A, 2 P)
Like Backstrom, Svechnikov had two goals for the Hurricanes in Game 1 and was a major threat in the third period as he jumpstarted Carolina's late rally. At just 19 years old, he's proven a lot to the league this season and is going to be a tough opponent to face in this series moving forward.
